Simultaneous movements

The challenge of polyphony is to make each voice work on its own (as we saw in the design of a sound voice), and to make its interrelation with the other voices satisfactory. In order to move towards this objective, it will be of great help to study the different types of simultaneous movements of the voices, becoming aware of the effect that each one of them produces:

 

 

Let’s see the analysis of the types of movement in the following polyphonic succession:

 

 

 

Notice in the example, how in the last iA (-3) there is a crossover of the voices (voice 1 goes up and voice 2 down). When there is voice crossover, the iA changes its sign to negative (-). To help better voice distinction, voice crossovers are usually avoided.

If more voices are superimposed, chords are created and the movement of the voices is more complex.
