The sound dimension (dS)
The sound dimension allows us to define the positions and distances between sounds. Sounds are waves that express themselves through their frequencies. The sound dimension is represented by a numbered vertical axis in pink, where the sounds are ordered.
We represent the sounds on the line indicated with an N, where we can measure their height or position on the dimension axis. To measure the distance between notes we use the sound intervals, represented on the line indicated by an iS.
In the Nuzic system we distinguish 3 types of sounds: notes, percussive sounds and silences.
Each musical note corresponds to an exact frequency.
The line of sounds where the notes are represented is delimited by the TET tuning system, which generally divides a register(octave) into twelve equal parts. This defines a total range of 83 available notes. This is how the sound line is divided into 7 registers or modules of 12 notes each, which make up the collection of chromatic notes. Notes can be expressed in absolute and modular numbering.
From the collection of chromatic notes we can define other sound collections, such as scales. In the latter case, a new numbering is generated in the sound line, representing the degrees of the scale we have chosen.
The waves of percussive sounds are more chaotic and create sounds with less defined notes.
Percussive sounds are represented in the app via MIDI drums.
Silence is the musical element that expresses the absence of sound and is a fundamental element of the sound dimension, since it allows us to generate rhythm and contrast in our compositions.
We classify silence (s) as a special element of the sound dimension, together with ties (L) and indefinite elements (e).
